Michael Welch Bey
Founder & President Michael Welch Bey, a three tour US Army veteran who served 8 years of honorable service. Michael Welch Bey founded ARISE in 2021 after serving 23 years of incarceration. It was during his incarceration when he began to tutor, teach history classes, along with paralegal services over the years. During which time he embraced the vision and mission of redeeming all incarcerated souls to esteem. After being released he started the nonprofit called ARISE in efforts to provide shelter, jobs, and inspirational classes to fight against recidivism and lead the way for returning citizens to take their place in the affairs of men.

William Jefferson
Executive Director William Jefferson brings over 20 years of experience in the technology industry, having worked with major software and Internet companies in roles including account management, project management, and consulting. His deep understanding of the tech landscape, combined with his expertise in managing complex projects, has made him a valuable asset in the field.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, William has dedicated more than 40 years to volunteer work, serving his communities in various capacities. He is passionate about giving back and is excited to continue this work with ARISE, where he can leverage his skills to make a positive impact. Originally from the northeast, William has been a proud resident of Charlotte for over 30 years. A devoted father to two sons, Brendan and Quinten, he enjoys spending time with them in their shared commitment to teaching and helping others through volunteer work. William’s dedication to both his professional and community responsibilities showcases his strong values and commitment to making a difference. |
Dawn Farley
Director Of Operations Dawn Farley brings her servant’s heart and a wide range of skills to ARISE as Director of Operations. With a background as an Executive Assistant, social media marketer, and former Redken educator for 20 years, she combines organizational expertise and creativity to support the organization’s mission.
A lifelong entrepreneur and educator, Dawn now focuses on helping others overcome social media challenges while ensuring ARISE stays organized and spreads its message effectively. When not working, Dawn enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with her life partner and her two beloved cats. Her passion for people and ARISE’s vision makes her an invaluable member of the team. |
Marvin Ponds
Treasurer Marvin Ponds is a 74 year old Charlotte native. He has two daughters, three grandchildren that he shares with his wife of 52 years, Rochelle. He attended West Charlotte High School, King's College (class of '69), and Fort Worth Christian College (class of '71).
Marvin retired from Concrete Supply Co. as an accountant. He saw the hardship and need to help returning inmates, so he decided to help Michael set up this nonprofit. You can find Marvin either golfing or in his garden. Spending time and involvement with family is his greatest passion. |
Francis Pendergrass
Chairman Francis is a Sales Executive for Customer Success – Strategic Global. In this role, he is assigned 6 Worldwide Global accounts. He is responsible for Adopting, Retaining, and Expanding (ARE) each account through collaboration with the WWS team, a strong understanding of the customers needs, and intentional use of the Solutions tools provided.
Francis started his career as LTL Freight Operations Manager with Watkins Motor Lines in 1983 and moved into an LTL Sales Executive position in 1996. In 2006 Watkins was purchased by FedEx and he transitioned into FedEx Services where he has held several Sales positions; Area Development Sales Executive, Business Development Sales Executive, and Enterprise Local Sales Executive. His most notable accomplishments include Ambassador’s Club and numerous MVP awards. Francis has lived in Charlotte, N.C. most of his life. He has been married to his lovely wife, Wanda, for 41 years. Together they have 2 children, Jurhandi and D`Najah. They enjoy traveling, playing golf, college football, and quiet time in the Appalachian Mountains. They are happy just spending quality time together. Francis holds a BS in Business and a minor in Urban Development from Johnson C. Smith University. |
Kevin Welch
Co-Chairman Kevin has 23 years of honorable military service, he pursued higher education at Johnson C Smith University for two years. Following his military career, he retired from First Union National Bank in 2004 after a successful tenure. He also contributed 13 years at Regules Printing Co and five years at PCI.
Now enjoying retirement, he reflects on a career built on dedication and hard work and improving his golf game. |
Deborah Jones
Secretary Deborah is a native of Charlotte and comes from a close knit family of nine siblings. She has experience in corporate banking and the legal industry as administrative assistant and legal secretary for 25+ years. She can be considered little shy and sometimes quiet by nature. She considers herself an easy going detailed-oriented, optimistic person who is dependable, flexible, patient and self-motivated. She does not like chaos.
Deborah knew Michael from Junior High School. After working on the Planning Committee for their reunion, a friend suggested to Michael that she thought Deborah would be a good fit for ARISE. Michael approached her, told her about his vision and asked if she would support ARISE on the executive board as the secretary. What drives her is to continue learning, looking for ways to improve while remaining focused and open minded. For her it's an honor to be apart of the team to support Michael's vision and stay connected with some of the people from the communities they grew up in. |
